Happy Holidays all!
I’m back from the chilly north to the… well, chillier
So the news is here that I started reading my Christmas present The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter. I thought I was alright with organic milk from grass-fed cows and eggs from cage-free chickens, but I realize now that’s not enough. I was totally oblivious to what happens to male calves from milk cows and normal practices like searing off chickens’ beaks. I was really upset with myself for not doing the due diligence regarding what I choose to eat and there’s simply no excuse for my ignorance.
So, today T.F. and I are starting a trial-run of a vegan diet. I’ve got some free time now before school starts so I can do the research to make sure I’m balancing our foods well and can focus on overcoming my texture issues with veggies. It’s never been that I don’t like the taste of them, it’s how gross they feel in my mouth. I took the first step this morning by eating a small strawberry. I’ve always loved strawberries, but the seeds! Yeeeeugh.
I don’t know how long it will last but I’m hoping I can make the changes now so that they will become routine once the stress starts to escalate later on in the year. The dogs, by chance, happen to be on a vegan food right now. For what it’s worth, they’ve been bounding around the house like crazy today. But maybe that’s just because of their new toys.
And although this is my blog and I can say and do whatever the hell I want, I’ve no intention of turning this into my food diary, dear readers. All I hope is that you take some time during your vacation to research the broader effects of your meat diet and be a little more conscious of how truly repulsive and unreasonable factory farming is.
If you’d like to look into “humane” meat products (and I hope you do), here’s some links:
And that, my friends, is all I’m going to say about that.

Good luck with the vegan! I've never been able to do it ... let me know how it goes!
just came across your blog through divine angst's blawg round-up, and thought i'd recommend another great book, which i'm currently reading: "The Omnivore's Dilemma", by Michael Pollan. he delves into the very interesting history of industrial, organic, alternative, and foraged food. happy new year! :)

Thanks Law Monkey! I've heard it's a good read so hopefully I can get to it over spring break.
sure thing! it is very good (so far), but also very long, at 464 pages - the size of our textbooks! :P good luck, and i hope you enjoy it if/when you get around to reading it. :)
i like meat. I like to tear into it with my jaws. I like to gnaw on it like an animal. I am going to continue to buy it from my butcher who sells only meat. I am meant to eat meat. And I'm going to revel in it. Speaking of meat, Corey just said he thinks we should get a cheetah. or a leapard. "Would that be cool? ... I mean, I nice one, that wouldn't eat Sierra... or me."
